Book Testimonial:
Ms. Sondra Martin Newly moved to Las Vegas from Glendale CA. USA

"I read the book, and it was easy to read, fun, even cute. But most of all it was really informative, and the ideas all work. Why, I worked for five years for a kitchen cabinet installer & construction company. I learned allot about cabinets and kitchens just working in the office. The one thing about Kitchen power is it is really that, empowering and the idea's in it, not only work but do save big. There were so many ideas and tips I had never thought of or seen before in the book. It's great."

How to care for Granite Countertops?

Your granite countertops will look and feel new for many years, provided that you give them proper care. Even though granite is one of the toughest materials around, it may still get discolored if you do not take care of it, and clean it regularly.
Granite care and maintenance
  • In order to preserve the shine and color of your granite countertop blot up any spills as soon as possible, to make sure that they do not break into the surface. In particular, orange juice, soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are acidic, and can cause damage to your countertops. If you do spill something, use a cloth or paper towel to soak up any major spills and then use a damp rag to take care of any sticky residue.
  • Granite holds up extremely well under heat, but thin strips of granite do not have enough surface area to absorb all the heat from dishes. Avoid placing very hot items right on your granite countertop's surface. Utilize place mats or trivets under very hot dishes. We suggest even using coasters under glasses that contain citrus juices.
  • Avoid Harsh Cleaning Products. Just like certain foods and beverages that have high levels of acid in them, some common household cleaners have high levels of acid and other chemicals that have the potential to damage your granite countertops.
  • If you see a rough patch, scratch or scratches on your granite countertop, do not attempt to fix them yourself - call a professional. Making a mistake while trying your hand at removing the scratch without experience working with stone countertops may cost you a lot of money.
  • Protect Your Countertops with a Sealant - one thing you can do to help protect your countertops from damage is to apply a sealant to them once they have been installed. A solvent-based sealer can be applied to granite countertops to help keep them looking new. This sealer does not make your countertops impervious to stains; it just means you have a little extra time to clean up a spill before the countertops will become stained. The life of this sealer varies based on a number of factors, but you can estimate that you will need to reapply the sealer to your countertops every six to thirty-six months or when water stops beading on the surface.

Other tips for cleaning granite counter tops

  • It is best to use a neutral cleaner on anything granite. You can purchase stone soap from almost any home improvement or hardware store. If you are having a hard time finding one, stick to warm water and mild dishwashing liquid. Avoid using products with lemon-based or vinegar-based ingredients in it. As a general rule, you should avoid using acidic compounds that can harm limestone or marble to make sure your granite does not get discolored. Also stay away from corrosive liquids, strong detergents, dry cleansers, and 'soft' cleansers, as they can strip away the granite's natural shine.
  • Never use anything abrasive like steel wool, scouring pads or scouring powders on your granite countertop. Don't use abrasive cleaners and never combine strong cleaning products like bleach and ammonia together, as the combination can be poisonous. Do not use vinegar, lemon or orange as cleaners, bathroom, tub, tile or grout cleaners as the acid can etch your granite countertops.
  • Remember to use only clean, soft cloths when wiping your granite countertop. Do not leave it wet - always rinse after washing and dry the surface with a soft cloth.

HEY KITCHEN CABINET DOOR STYLES:

Many companies sell low cost cabinets, with thin, 1/8th inch thick plywood panels in the center panel of the door, these are usually the contractor level kitchen doors and cheap doors.
But there are companies that sell a great low cost kitchen, and give you the best quality door with a "raised pane"l of solid wood, and 3/4 of an inch thick. Here are some looks to think about: The last door pictured is not a raised panel but a shaker style door. I will have more on doors soon, so come back and as the tips and tricks articles grow, you'll become a kitchen expert, or at least an informed and empowered kitchen buyer.

Kitchen Power Book excerpt:

Kitchen cabinet choices:

Get It Your Way the choice is yours with options galore or is it?. Custom Cabinets? Stock Cabinets? Semi-custom Cabinets? The abundance of cabinet choices can be divided into three broad - and sometimes blurred - categories: stock, semi-custom, and custom. According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), roughly half the cost of a complete kitchen remodeling job will go to cabinets.

Kitchenpower note:

Read this section over, I have a reason for having it here. It's not just about cabinets, it also about the parts of cabinets, the things that go into the installing of cabinets. All this info, builds to the next chapter installation, and then the design chapter. I want you to read this stuff, because unless you're a cabinet maker, or kitchen designer, you find in the design section ways that you get cheated when you order or buy cabinets. Sometimes the "cheat" is a part left out, or it's a cheaper way of building a cabinet, that leaves you no way to install lighting. At the time of purchase your going wow, this is cheap, but later on, when you want to do certain things, you're stopped dead. Either way you pay for it, and then pay for it some more!
Buying kitchen cabinets would be easier if there were fewer choices. The upside of all of these choices is, you can find almost anything you want in a kitchen cabinet. On the downside, wading through the seemingly limitless variety of products to get that just-right combination of style and price can be downright daunting. Where to start? Here's a closer look at why you might select one type over the others.
First, with some definitions of what's out there. Generally, but not always, the stock category is the least expensive and offers the fewest options, and custom is the most expensive and offers the most options. Semi-custom cabinets are in the middle and you usually get these through a large cabinet manufacturing company at a large home improvement store, and other smaller kitchen stores also. Many kitchen designers also have access to semi-custom manufacturers and specialize in European imports. So there are allot of places to go for these.
Your Second set of choices. Now hang in there because as we go along this is just background and this book has helpful guides to make sense of all of this. Cabinet colors or stained; stock or custom; cherry, hickory, maple, oak, or pine. Final costs can vary significantly based on the type of cabinets and the materials you select (hardwoods and exotic veneers are the costliest). Accessories, modifications and unique finish treatments always increase costs (any glaze, because it is a second coat of hand rubbed stain will cost more). Based on how they're built and the degree of customization available. A veneer is wood cut paper thin, today many cabinet companies use photographic reproductions of the wood you choose for your cabinets, and paste that on top of particle board. This is usually done of cabinet sides and door panels. Below you can see how a cabinet's parts, can be veneered, solid wood, MDF or particle board parts. (to Be continued)
